As IVF is an increasingly more common medical procedure, more “spare” embryos are available. Recent studies indicated that, of the couples who were attempting to conceive through IVF, 70 percent would be willing to donate any embryos that they might have left over after getting pregnant successfully. And there are more and more of such eggs. If you don’t have the possibility of getting pregnant with your own eggs, embryo adoption could be a real option for you. What are the pros and cons of embryo adoption?Pros

• Embryo adoption could provide women who would otherwise not be able to gestate a pregnancy to be pregnant, and give birth themselves.

• Embryo adoption finds homes for embryos that would otherwise be destroyed or remain in storage.

• Being pregnant provides the intended mother with the opportunity to bond with her unborn child in utero.

• Some fertility clinics have programs that match women with embryos at a relatively low cost, meaning that the IVF will need to be covered, but the embryo, which was often “donated” by its biological parents, is offered at no additional cost.

• For couples in which both partners have fertility problems, embryo adoption is easier than locating a sperm donor and an egg donor separately.

• Embryo adoption is legally more straight forward than traditional adoption, as it is seen as a transfer of property in the eyes of the law.

Cons

• Some people are uncomfortable with anonymous embryo adoption, in which they know very little about the background of the embryo.

• Embryo adoption agencies can be extremely costly, though as seen above, they are not the only means of being matched with an embryo.

• Some argue that embryo adoption puts already existing children awaiting adoption at a disadvantage. Though I think that is largely a flawed argument, as those choosing adoption and those opting for fertility treatments are not the same groups of people.

• Those matched with embryos through Christian agencies will not have the opportunity to have multiple embryos implanted simultaneously.

Lucky are those who live in province Manitoba. Their health minister says the province will soon help those people who suffer from fertility problems and can’t afford to pay for fertility treatments with tax credit.

Theresa Oswald announced that a new tax credit will start October the 1st and this credit will cover as much as 40% of IVF costs and other related procedures, but maximum $8.000 a year.

The credit will be available to dingle mothers and couples, no matter what their age is or social or financial statues: young and old, black and white, rich or poor are welcomed as long as they receive treatment by a recognized clinic or fertility specialist – government will not limit in that sense.

Of course doctors are the ones who will advise women and couples what is the best choice according to their health and fertility-related problems.

Officials predict that the tax credit is expected to cost the province about $800.000 a year.

Canadian infertility awareness association has been pressuring Ontario and other provinces to follow the example of Manitoba, while Quebec is the only province that offers similar financial aid. Canadian infertility awareness association claims that government can actually save money on the long run, because specific unregulated treatments and therefore risks can be reduced.

However, there are those who oppose too, Canadian Taxpayers Federation for example. They claim that they are not against funding fertility treatments, but they do believe that the benefit for few comes at the expense of the many. They claim that tax credits such as ‘infertility tax credit’ are the cause for problems in managing and the reason for hiring additional bureaucrats. The group suggests they should instead cut income taxes for everyone.

Regarding such credits, Canadian Taxpayers Federation highlights what happens with governments with limited funds for health care, because they MUST ration spending and choose between competing drugs, services, and programs. This means some get cash and some do not. Instead, there should be private parallel care to alleviate financial stress on the system. If they don’t do that then we are left to decide between grandma’s hip replacement and credits such as this one. Voters and taxpayers are forced to choose which to fund or expect more tax hikes to pay for more.

There is additional benefit for couples undergoing fertility treatment: they will be able to get existing credits for general medical expenses — 15 % federally and 10.8% provincially.

The frustration of not being able to get pregnant is overwhelming… it takes over your whole life… and when you realize that the state is cutting back on your coverage the frustration only gets worst. Financial frustration…

In July 2010, all employees who have health insurance though the state will be required to pay for 1 fourth of the bill.

The new regulations are aiming at all infertility-related medical services and all infertility-related prescription medications.

The new health plan caps $25.000, which is drop for $5.000 comparing to $30.000 available up till July. New state health plan will cap lifetime infertility services at $10,000 for medical care and for medicine $15,000.

American Society of Reproductive Medicine reports that one cycle of IVF can annually average $12,500. There are many people who use health insurance for infertility reasons, because the infertility treatments are really too expensive. Many people had hoped that the word of cutbacks was just a rumor, but the word is out officially – the cutbacks start in July.

Delaware State Employee Benefits Committee made the decision because they are the ones who manage the state’s projected $570 million self-funded insurance plan for fiscal 2011, beginning July 1. This insurance plan covers more than 110.000 state employees, retirees and their dependents, and all other participants that belong to the state plan. She also pointed out that there are states in US that do not offer benefits for infertility services…

The director of the state Office of Management and Budget Ann Visalli claims that with the cutback the state will save about $625,000, and that the cutback will affect only 150 people… “only”… However, the doctor who runs infertility practice in Delaware claims there are more than 150 patients whose health insurance is covered by the state.

The cutback will definitely cause additional frustration of not being able to have a child… and additional frustration of state not being supportive about infertility treatments. high prices f IVF will definitely cost additional financial stress and stress lowers the IVF success.. is that right?

Recently a research was conducted by Dr Kirsten Wisborg and colleagues from the Perinatal Epidemiology Research Unit at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, that suggests women who conceive using fertility treatment such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) run a fourfold higher risk of a stillbirth. Study was supported by grants from the Dagmar Marshall’s Fund, and published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Human Reproduction.

A research that was conducted and the numbers that support it say women who conceive using fertility treatment such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) run a fourfold higher risk of a stillbirth, in other words: infertility treatments (IVF/ICSI) increase the risk of stillbirths. The numbers were compared to women who conceived naturally or used other assisted reproductive treatments.

The risk of stillbirth is 4 times greater, but it is also important to bring out that the absolute risk was still small. For example, the risk for naturally (or non-IVF assisted) conceptions was approximately 4 stillbirths per 1000 pregnancies, which is less than 1%, while the risk with IVF or ICSI was approximately 16 stillbirths per 1000 pregnancies. This leads to conclusion that these techniques raise the risk by approximately 12 stillbirths per 1000 pregnancies or about 1%. In other words, one woman in a hundred might experience a stillbirth because she underwent IVF or ICSI.

Additionally, the findings are confounded by the fact that women receiving IVF or ICSI may be at increased risk of stillbirths due to factors such as their age.

As a comparison, a study that was conducted by Swedish scientists on a large group of women (27,000 women having IVF) and a control group of more than 2 million women with natural pregnancies, suggests that no increase in stillbirths from either IVF or ICSI treatment was found.

Moreover, it is important to bring out that when undergoing IVF or ICSI, couples should be encouraged to opt for single embryo transfer in order to reduce the risk of multiple birth pregnancy such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and serious health problems.

People try acupuncture for all sorts of conditions, from infertility, asthma, and back pain, to irritable bowel syndrome. Acupuncture involves having thin needles put into your skin, and represents an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Acupuncture can carry a risk of serious infections through the needles that are used during acupuncture. Scientists from the University of Hong Kong say the problem should be regulated more closely, and although problems seem to be rare, they often go unreported. This leads to conclusion the side effects we do see may be the tip of the iceberg.

In acupuncture practice use of sterile needles represents an important moral and health obligation. Without careful use of sterile equipment carries a great risk of infection. Infection happens either by passing germs between people or by introducing germs from the skin into the body.

Researchers from microbiology department at the University of Hong Kong report in their study more than 50 worldwide cases of infection after acupuncture. Skin infections seemed to be the most common problem, usually because patient’s skin wasn’t disinfected. However, they also report serious infections of joints and tissues around heart, spine or brain. There is even a case of MRSA or superbug infection: the patient needed a surgery to remove infected joint and six months of treatment with strong antibiotics.

There have also been several hepatitis B associated with acupuncture outbreaks reported. Theoretically, it is possible to transmit HIV with acupuncture but there are no confirmed cases.

As already said, the main problem is improperly sterilized reusable needles that may potentially transmit a disease. However, serious problems don’t seem to be common, and acupuncture in rigorously sterile conditions is unlikely to put you at risk. Rigorous control of acupuncture practitioners, in means of stricter regulation and accreditation, is needed. But also their own self control and moral responsibility in observing all infection control measures, such as using disposable needles, skin disinfection procedures, and aseptic techniques.

If you are planning acupuncture, make sure to visit practitioner who is registered with national organization, and also check if that person treating you has professional indemnity insurance.

It is important to emphasis that infection can happen and that acupuncture does carry some risks, but so does the visit to the dentist or taking aspirin. Anyway, do to rise unnecessary panic: following article should give additional explanation that should preserve positive reputation of acupuncture and give a balanced, accurate representation of factual medical information.

A Dutch study that was reported in the journal Fertility and Sterility suggests that a Mediterranean diet, a diet rich in vegetables and their oils, and especially high in fish consumption, might have an impact on likelihood of becoming pregnant after infertility treatment.

Dutch scientist observed more than 160 couples that were undergoing fertility treatment, and they found that women whose nutrition was close to Mediterranean type of diet were as much as 40% more likely to become pregnant.

However, study does not prove that the diet itself boosts the success of fertility treatment. Since the study was “observational”, and the researchers asked couples about their usual diets, and then followed the groups’ outcomes after fertility treatment, studies like this cannot prove cause-and-effect, and there are no direct proves Mediterranean diet boosts fertility.

But the doctors do agree that couples that are undergoing fertility treatment should eat balanced diet that include vegetables, vegetable oil, beans and fish.

Key components of the Mediterranean diet include eating plenty amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables. Including healthy vegetable oils, like olive or canola oil into diet. Fish is an important ingredient of Mediterranean diet: fish or shellfish is at least twice a week on a menu, while red meat is not so often. Whole grains and small portions of nuts are also one of the essentials. I must not forget red wine, but in limited amounts and perhaps if you are trying to conceive it would be better not to drink it at all. Mediterranean diet is also known for using herbs such as coriander, oregano, basilica and less salt.

There are several reasons why the fertility rate was on the side of Mediterranean diet:

Mediterranean diet is good because of vegetable oil and fish rich in omega 6 fatty acids and they are precursors to hormone-like substances in the body, also known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins is involved in the menstrual cycle, ovulation and pregnancy maintenance.

Research also suggests that women who eat Mediterranean diet have higher levels of vitamin B6, and in one some studies prove that giving vitamin B6 to women who were having difficulty when trying to conceive increased their chances of pregnancy.

Clomiphene citrate, also known by its brand names Clomid and Serophene, is the most commonly prescribed fertility drug used to induce ovulation. Although being successful in infertility treatment, not all women are advised to use Clomid, before the doctor recommends them to do so. This powerful ovulation inducing drug could also have various side effects that you should be aware of.

It’s usually your doctor who will determine that Clomid is the best fertility option for you. You will be asked to start taking Clomid 2 to 5 days after you begin your menstrual period. Your doctor will carefully monitor your hormone levels during the week of taking Clomid.
If you start ovulating, you will be instructed to stop taking the medication and when to have intercourse after in order to increase the chances of successful conception.

If you were not successful in getting pregnant with the first cycle, you will repeat Clomid, but no more than six menstrual cycles. You will be advised to look for another fertility option.

However, if your treatment with Clomid was successful, inducing the ovulation after the first cycle, you should be aware of the fact that this fertility drug could have potential side effects after the ovulation.

Most common problem when taking Clomid is probability of having twins and multiple pregnancies. During clinical trials of Clomid, 6.9% of pregnancies were twin pregnancies, while the 0.5% were triplets, 0.3% were quadruplets, and 0.1% were quintuplets. To reduce the chances of having multiple pregnancies while taking Clomid, your doctor should always start you on the lowest dose of Clomid first, before trying higher doses of Clomid.

Another common side effect are hot flushes or night sweats, with 10% of women experiencing them as feeling of sudden warm episodes, followed by chills. It’s not dangerous, but it is uncomfortable.

Changes in cervical mucus as well as dry vagina could be frustrating potential side effect of Clomid. Cervical mucus helps transport the sperm into the cervix, and if it becomes thick because of treatment with Clomid, this can decrease the chances of getting pregnant.

More or less uncomfortable conditions such as headaches, dizziness, weight gain, nausea and bloating are also side effects of Clomid. They all could be lessened with medications, proper diet and hydration during treatment. However, severe nausea could be a sign of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, which is rare, but dangerous side effect of fertility drugs.

Spotting in the middle of your cycle can be related just to the Clomid and doesn’t necessarily indicate pregnancy. However, if accompanied with other symptoms such as fever, nausea or abdominal pain, you should contact your doctor.

Besides these ‘mild’ side effects of Clomid, treatment with this fertility drug could cause more serious conditions such as ovarian cysts or ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
Less than 1% of women treated with Clomid will develop an ovarian cyst, which is typically benign (not cancer), disappearing on its own not long after the treatment cycle is over. If the cyst does not go away after the treatment is over, the doctor should be consulted.

As been said, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is rare but potentially dangerous condition. It means dangerous enlargement of the ovaries with a fluid that could leak into the stomach or chest, causing further complications. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can only occur once ovulation takes place after treatment with Clomid. Symptoms may occur a few days after ovulation, including:

Mild symptoms:

Bloating

Mild pain or discomfort in the abdomen

Mild weight gain

Mild nausea

Diarrhea

Or serious symptoms:

Excessive weight gain, more than 10 pounds in 3 to 5 days.

Severe nausea

Severe abdominal pain

Severe bloating

Dizziness

Trouble with urinating

Shortness of breath

Rapid heartbeat

If you are using Clomid and have one or more of symptoms, you should visit your doctor immediately.

For a couple that has been trying for a long time to conceive a baby, the methods used can make a very real difference in whether they are able to get pregnant. Some people are able to become pregnant through the simple act of sexual intercourse and nothing else is needed, however, others need something more. There are medical procedures, alternative therapies and holistic methods which can be employed and some may actually play an important role in helping couples conceive.

For couples seeking an alternative to costly medical procedures there is a chance they may be wondering about herbal remedies. Infertility treatment, herbal remedy tisane de bourbon is an herbal mixture that originates from England and is supposed to flush all the impurities from the blood of a female. The mixture works on the blood by removing toxins and some believe it has the power to increase fertility.

As with any type of herbal mixture, tisane de bourbon can cause side effects with a woman. Some symptoms of an allergic reaction can include hives, itching, and swelling of the lips, tongue and face, edema in the fingers and feet or a topical rash. If a woman is considering adding the herbal mixture to her diet, she should always first consult with her physician or fertility specialist to make sure it is safe to do so.

Trying to conceive a baby is an arduous task for a couple to endure and when a diagnosis of infertility is given, it can be heartbreaking and discouraging. There have been many revolutionary breakthroughs in the world of reproductive medicine which is a reason for people to hold out hope for becoming pregnant. Attitude and infertility treatments go hand-in-hand, and with the right mind frame a couple can soon find themselves expecting a much longed for infant.

An infertility treatment, herbal remedy tisane de bourbon is something that some couples have had success with, but people should never explore the supplement without seeking medical advice first. Some herbal remedies are safe and some are not approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and should not be used by couples trying to conceive. Everything a couple does prior to becoming pregnant will have a direct impact on the health of the mother and child and should be taken into serious consideration and treated with importance.

There are a number of couples across the United States experiencing some form of infertility. The number of women in the country with impaired fecundity ages 15-44 is approximately 7.3 million. Statistics surrounding married women highlight that about 7.4% are infertile or 2.1 million, while approximately 7.3 million have used fertility assistance when trying to conceive.

Infertility statistics show that while a woman feels an infertility issue is exclusive to her alone, there are many millions more going through the same thing. When a couple has been struggling for a long period of time trying to conceive, there are many emotional and physical issues which must be faced on a daily basis. When a couple experiences a diagnosis of infertility, it is heartbreaking and can make them feel like completely giving up on the dream of trying to conceive.

Commonly couples will hear a response of “try for a year and then come back”, from fertility specialists. However, for a couple that is over 35 years of age, the year can seem like a daunting eternity and in some cases it is not necessary to wait for a year. Couples thinking about conceiving a baby and think there might be a problem may try to use fertility prediction kits, charting and other natural methods in order to become pregnant. For those that have done all these things, there are a wide variety of different options available and speaking to a fertility specialist can make a difference.

Usually, a woman’s regular gynecologist will make a diagnosis of infertility, but it is not always the case. At times it can be the man’s doctor that makes a diagnosis of fertility impairment and males are responsible for approximately 50% of all cases of infertility. After a diagnosis of infertility has been determined, a couple may be referred to a reproductive endocrinologist, an expert in the field of infertility treatment.

No matter what the reasons are behind a couple experiencing an inability to get pregnant, infertility statistics point to a reason for hope. Approximately 85-90% of couples that have been diagnosed as infertile will be able to be treated using conventional medical treatment, surgical repair and fertility drugs in order to conceive. Never giving up hope and keeping a positive attitude about infertility will allow a couple to face the challenges of infertility together and someday possibly be able to have their long dreamed of baby.

It is possible to increase fertility with yoga poses: restorative fertility yoga postures encourage human body to be more open to conception. It is not about being more flexible and being able to curl your left leg over your right shoulder: this will not boost your fertility: yoga is about balancing body and mind and not only improving your physical conditional and body flexibility. There are additional external factors that contribute to the fact you might have problems trying to conceive, and these include caffeine, alcohol, smoking, stress, including communication between partners and financial worries etc.

For this reason it is essential to include meditation into fertility yoga: involving your mind into connection between your body and mind. Yoga experts would say you should repeat a phrase of wanting to get pregnant in a way that awakens a peaceful spirit, transform it into mantra, and this way help yourself declare your purpose without fear or negativity.

Of course there are yoga postures that boost fertility, and are described as poses for infertility because they boost body restoration, promote hormone production, increase responsiveness of the body and promote blood circulation to reproductive organs.

Different fertility postures aim at different set of goals. For example, Supported Headstand (Salamba Sirsasana ), Supported Shoulderstand (Salamba Sarvangasana) and Supported Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana) both boost hormones and have balanced effect on hormones.

Forward bends are also recommendable; they include: Child’s Pose, Seated Forward Bend, Wide-Angle Pose (Upavistha Konasana), Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana) and Cobbler’s Pose or Bound Angle Pose (Baddha Konasana), Staff Pose (Dandasana), Head-to-Knee Forward Bend (Janu Sirsasana), Garland Pose (Malasana) – they are rejuvenate the body. If you find some of these poses uncomfortable, place a chair in front of you and rest your head and arms on the seat for support. You can also use use a bolster for support.

Lotus pose, Reclining Bound Angle Pose (Bound Supta Baddha Konasana) and Reclining Hero Pose (Supta Virasana) relax and boost the abdominal area and send blood to reproductive organs at the same time. This is because they open and elongate the abdominal area.

Pose known as Legs on the Wall Pose (Viparita Karani) improves better sperm penetration in the uterus. This pose is recommendable after coitus since it encourages the possibility for the sperm penetration. Prepare the pose before coitus, and keep the abdominal area soft as you move into and out of the pose – your partner can assist you to make this possible. For beginners most of the poses might be a bit uncomfortable at start, for this reason it is recommended to use pillow or a towel that can help you feel more comfortable during the pose.
