Insomnia, hormonal changes, dehydration and low blood sugar levels are among the many reasons that pregnant women have a tendency to suffer from headaches more often than the average woman. Extra stress, both emotional and physical, can also contribute to headaches in expectant mothers, as can general fatigue. Headaches can be quite debilitating, so curing them when they arise is probably very important to you. But, what are headache remedies that are safe in pregnancy and actually work?
While it is still said that over the counter remedies such as tylenol are not contraindicated in pregnancy, many studies have come to light in recent years that suggest such pain killers have at least some negative potential. With modern medicine at our disposal, most of us would not think about doing anything other than taking a tablet to cure a headache. But there are some proactive things we can do that do not include medication. Here is our headache remedy checklist.
- Try to get enough sleep. We know that that can be a real struggle when you are pregnant. Physical complaints like hip pain, back pain, frequent episodes of heartburn or just being too big to find a comfortable position, can stand in the way of a good night’s sleep. But a lack of sleep is a major contributor to headaches, so at least try to nap some during the day if you can’t sleep well at night.
- Gently massaging your temples can alleviate headaches. There are specific acupoints that can cure headaches, so visiting an acupuncturist for relief from frequent headaches may help you.
- Making pregnancy ailments are in fact cause by dehydration. It is essential to make sure you drink enough while you are expecting. Do not wait until you are thirsty, and try to remember to drink water throughout the day. If you are experiencing headaches, ask yourself if you are sufficiently hydrated.
- Getting some fresh air can send a headache packing sometimes. Try it!
