Early pregnancy symptoms while breastfeeding
There is no better time to write about conceiving a baby while breastfeeding than this week, World Breastfeeding Week. I have written before that exclusive breastfeeding on demand is a pretty effective contraceptive method. Getting pregnant while breastfeeding can be a challenge, particularly while your baby is still small. It is possible to conceive while you are breasfeeding though, and your chances go up once you introduce your baby to solid food. Getting your period again is a sign that you might be fertile again, but using ovulation tests is the best way to discover whether you are fertile again. Have you been trying to get pregnant again, but are still nursing your older child? Here are some early pregnancy symptoms while breastfeeding.
Obviously, your usual “tender breasts” does not apply as a symptom of pregnancy when you are breastfeeding, though there are likely to be changes in your milk supply, and the taste of your milk may also change, due to hormonal fluctuations. Perhaps a child who fusses at the breast is one of the most obvious symptoms of your new pregnancy. Fussiness can imply a decrease in your supply, as well as a change in taste.
Your breasts may also feel overly sensitive, and nursing might be slightly painful. Some women find themselves feeling strange and fidgety when they are feeding their older child, and might develop a sudden aversion to nursing. I think this also qualifies as a definitely pregnancy symptom!
If you conceived while still breastfeeding an older child, congratulations! You made it this far, and you do not need to stop now, if your milk supply has not dried up (as it does, for some women). There are women who successfully breastfeed throughout their pregnancies and then go on to tandem nurse their new baby and their older child. If you feel that you can no longer handle breastfeeding, and you feel aggressive while doing it, that is a valid sign to stop nursing though. Breastfeeding is beneficial as long as both parties are enjoying it. If nursing while pregnant does not feel right for you, or your supply decreased so much that your child does not want to nurse any more, don’t feel guilty!

Hi..I’m still feeding my 1.3 yr old son… I feel like my tummy gets bigger eventhough my appetite same or lesser coz i’m in the process of diet. When i test, it showed negative. But, for the last two wks, I feel sick since morning till afternoon.
Any suggestion…Am i pregnant?
Thanks
When did you test? Is it possible that you tested too early, before you would get a positive result? In that case – test again. If the test shows up negative again, please go to see your family doctor if symptoms persist. Pregnancy-like symptoms can sometimes be caused by other reproductive issues, such as an ovarian cyst for instance. I don’t mean to scare you – everyone gets bloated and nauseous sometimes! It could be an upset tummy too. But if you keep on feeling like this, it is better to err on the side of caution. Let us know how you are!

HIe,
i would like to knw weather i ll get pregnant or not,
i took i pil within 12 hrs of unprotected sex, and also took i pill 15 dys before 2nd unprotected sex. But mc for Ist unprotected sex cam within 7 days…
i have frequent headaches, nausea without vomiting, i’m bloated, period-like cramps but no period for a month now, and i’ve been regular since my cycle started back after having my first period. the only thing that’s stopping me from getting a pregnancy test is my INCREASED supply of breastmilk. my baby is 11 mos old now and it was diminishing, but suddenly they are rock hard after only a few hrs. so could this be a symptom of pregnancy still even tho its the complete opposite??
my baby is 12 weeks and my milk supply has gone from 30oz a day to 6oz a day could this be a sign of pregnancy????
PLEASE HELP

I assume you are pumping? There are many possible reasons why a mom would end up with less pumped milk, without the actual milk supply being affected. Do you pump exclusively, or nurse too?
I am breastfeeding my 8 month old and noticed for the first time that he was fussing at the breast on Feb. 12. I’m pretty sure that I am experiencing uterine cramping when I feed him because it is very uncomfortable. I am nauseated on and off throughout the day and have mild period-like cramping on and off. I have not a a cycle since birth. I’ve taken 4 tests, all negative. I’ve also noticed a change in color and consistency of my milk. The tests say no, I wonder if I am making myself have symptoms, although they are quite apparent. I was almost 10 weeks pregnant with my first child before i got a positive test, but tested positive prior to my missed period with my second….
Help!
Patty…Did you end up being pregnant? My story sounds exactly like yours so I’m freaking out a little. I want to know if you found out!
Hi Patty, how did you go? I got the similar symptoms. My baby is 11 months old, had unprotected sex with husband about a month ago. I’ve been experiencing uterine cramping on and off since a week and a half after having sex. Other than a decrease in milk supply (I express once a day, my expressed supply had always been low, but it’s MUCH lesser in the last week, but it could also be because I’d weaned my from 4 feeds a day to 3) and tiredness (I was so tired the other day that I went to sleep straight after putting baby to sleep, without brushing teeth and washing my face!). Last pregnancy I had morning sickness throughout but I don’t have any morning sickness symptom so far. I don’t know if I’d always had uterine cramps all throughout, and that I’m only noticing it now because I’m quite clucky to get pregnant and creating all these “false pregnancy symptoms”. I’ve had a negative pregnancy test 2 weeks ago and one again last week
Trying to convince myself that I’m not pregnant (as the probability is very low – we only tried once!), so unless I have other symptoms, I won’t test again, cos i feel like a mad woman keep taking the tests when it keeps coming back as negative. Maybe I’m getting my first period soon that’s why I’m having these symptoms?
Hey Patty, Zoe, and Samantha…
Did you find out if your pregnant? I’m having similar symptoms. My son is 9 months old and I haven’t had a period in 2 months. I was averaging a 40 day cycle. My supply has decreased dramatically in the past two days. I went from pumping 8-10 oz at work to 6 oz. I sat there yesterday for an hour (2 30 minute sessions 2 hrs apart) and got NOTHING!!!
Ive already taken 3 pregnancy tests and they all came back negative. I have cramping when I pump and Im really tired. My nipples are sore but my son also just got teeth… Please let me know what happened!
So i need some advice. My daughter is 11 months and 1 week old. Ive had a cycle, and i even ovulated like i was supposed to. I am currently 11 days late. I am experiencing extreme pain in my nipples when my baby nurses.i am nauseus and my smell is off.ive taken four tests in the last week.all negative.my mom seems to think i am pregnant, due to a huge pooch that us forming and fast.also in my families experience it takes up to three months for a positive result to show up while breastfeeding.i want another baby like NOW, but my hub wants to wait a few more months.could it be possible i am,and its still too early????
Also i forgot, my milk supply has dropped dramatically.even with solids,my baby still nursed about 8 times durin the day and about 5 during the night.now she can only nurse about 3 times during the day and the same amount at night also. I am overly tired and literally have no energy.its not like me at all!!!!
Lynsey, head to your family doctor for a blood test/ultrasound. You are obviously experiencing symptoms that usually go along with pregnancy, but they can be due to other things as well. In any case, you’ll want to check it out. Good luck!
Hi, I am breastfeeding my second child who is 7 months old. I am on the mini pill but may miss a pill once a month or so but take 2 the next day. I have been feeling tired and dizzy the past 2-3 weeks and have been feeling nauseated this past week. I am scared I might be pregnant with my 3rd child! Do you think I could be pregnant?
