To use ovulation calendar you need to enter:
- The first day of your last period: this means the first day of your last menstrual flow.
- The length of your menstrual cycle: the number of days from the first day of menstruation to the day before the following menstrual period starts.
- The length of your luteal phase: if you don’t know the length of your luteal phase, you can assume it’s 14 days.
How to read this ovulation calendar?
Red indicates blood – menstrual flow:
Dates that are colored red represent the section of the month when your period starts. The first day is labeled with the darkest red, because this is usually the day menstrual flow is the heaviest. On average, a woman’s menstrual flow lasts from three to five days. Usually on the first day, the bleeding is the heaviest, and then it slowly subsides.
Green indicates fertility – ovulation:
Dates that are colored green represent the section of the month when you are most fertile – the time around your ovulation. The darkest green is labeled as THE ovulation day and this is the time you are considered most fertile. Since a woman’s fertile period starts about four to five days before actual ovulation, and ends approximately 24 to 48 hours afterward, there are several days that are colored green. All these days have a potential if you are trying to conceive.
Gender selection:
According to the Shettles method, it is possible to determine a baby’s gender by timing your intercourse. The dark gray frame around the ovulation calendar dates determines the dates that are most appropriate for conceiving. If you would like to conceive a baby boy, the frames will appear around your ovulation day, but if you would like to conceive a baby girl, a frame will appear on the days preceding actual ovulation. If you have no preference regarding the gender of your baby, no frame will appear.
How do I calculate my fertile days using our free ovulation calendar?
You do not have to do any math – our ovulation calendar will do all the work for you! Based on your menstrual cycle data, our free ovulation calendar calculates your fertile aka ovulation days.
To use ovulation calendars you need to enter:
- The first day of your last period: this means the first day of your last menstrual flow.
- The length of your menstrual cycle: the number of days from the first day of menstruation to the day before the following menstrual period starts.
- The length of your luteal phase: AKA “days past ovulation” or “DPO”, is the part of the cycle that starts at ovulation and ends the day before your next period. The only way to determine the exact length of your luteal phase is through hormone-specific blood tests. If you are not sure about the length of your luteal phase, you can assume it is 14 days, which is the average length and does not vary by more than a day or two in most people.
Based on the data given, the free ovulation calendar generates your personal daily fertility chart.
For example, if your cycle is 29 days long and your luteal phase is 12 days long, ovulation will occur on day 17 of your cycle (29-12=17). Ovulation calendars use this formula to calculate your time of ovulation.
If you have a gender preference, simply select boy or girl from the gender field. The method used for gender selection is called the Shettles method. Dr Landrum Shettles claimed a 75 to 90 percent success rate for his simple at-home method, which advises how to time intercourse to conceive a boy or a girl.
**The Shettles Method is based on a theory of X and Y chromosomes. X chromosomes represent a girl and Y represent a boy. His theory is said to have 75 percent success rate with couples who want to determine baby’s sex, although as already said it should be taken with a bit of healthy skepticism.
The basic principle behind his theory claims that Y chromosomes (for those who want to conceive a baby boy) are smaller and more fragile, but faster comparing to X chromosomes that are slower, but also larger and more resilient and are able to survive longer when they are once released.
**What is ovulation?
The time of ovulation is one of the most important things a woman should understand about her body since it is the determining factor in getting pregnant and preventing pregnancy. Ovulation is the most fertile period of menstrual cycle – it is a period when woman is most likely to get pregnant or when the chances of conception are the highest. Woman’s fertile period starts about 4-5 days before ovulation, and ends about 24-48 hours after it.
**What happens during ovulation?
During ovulation a single, mature egg (aka ovum) that developed in the ovary during the menstrual cycle is released from a follicle. When the egg is released, it is capable of being fertilized for 12 to 24 hours, and then it begins to disintegrate. Ovulation usually happens in the middle of the menstrual cycle, and if the released egg (ovum) is fertilized and successfully implants, woman becomes pregnant. However, if the egg isn’t fertilized and if woman does not become pregnant, the egg is passed from the reproductive tract during menstrual bleeding, which starts about two weeks after ovulation.
However, sometimes anovulatory cycles happen. These are menstrual cycles when no egg is released but when a woman does have her period. On the other, it is also important to bring out that woman can their get period (meaning menstrual flow does occur), but she does not ovulate. The ability to ovulate does vary from month to month, and can be delayed by a number of factors such as stress, illness, diet, or increased physical activity.
**What happens in the ovaries?
Woman has two ovaries and each produces many eggs during one menstrual cycle (which usually lasts approximately one month). Largest of the eggs is expelled into the pelvic cavity and swept into the Fallopian tube. There is no regular pattern between ovaries and it is fairly arbitrary which ovary will release the eggs.
**Explaining Ovulation with Hormones
Two hormones which create conditions conducive to fertilization are produced during ovulation: oestradiol and progesterone.
Oestradiol is produced alone by the developing follicle before ovulation and it stimulates the glands of the cervix to secrete fertile mucus and to stimulate the growth of the endometrium lining the uterus.
After ovulation, both oestradiol and progesterone are produced by the corpus luteum which forms from the ruptured follicle. Progesterone causes the abrupt change in the mucus which occurs immediately after ovulation and defines the Peak symptom. This hormone also prepares the oestrogen-primed endometrium for implantation of the fertilized ovum.

Keep at it!

Loli, I just got married in September and I’m 31 no kids yet. I am trying at times a little discouraged; however, I’m trying not to think about it anymore and just have fun “practicing”. You’re very blessed to at least have one child of your own. Please stay encouraged and as far as your friends it sounds as if they don’t want to hurt you KNOWING you have been trying. At this point just keep it between you and your husband or signifcant other and if you need to confide in someone let it be by blogging or forums because the stress alone can be preventing you from conceiving. You sound as if you are a woman of faith, God has already given you peace. John 14:27 HTH
I am 28 and have had 1 miscarriage a set of twins and another miscarriage. I spent 2 years on the depo shot because of a physical illness and now after 4 years and extensive hormone treatment my body is ready to try again. My fiance and I have been trying to conceive and for months nothing. The Doctors say that there is nothing wrong with either of us and even though everything is “fine” I am discouraged at times but I know God does these things on his time not on ours. Keila thank you for your enouragement I have never commented before just read others comments but tonight I don’t feel so alone – My darling fiance is also a man of faith and well maybe for a lil while we will just have fun practicing too. Happy Holidays -

Hello there. I’m a 30 year old mum and i’ve had two lucky natural pregnancies with no complications. They are both in primary school. My boyfriend and i have been trying to conceive and it hasn’t happened yet. We’ve been trying for 9months now. The last bf i tried for 7 years with no luck. I’ve had tests done and shows that my uterus is retroverted and the sex can be quiet painful or very uncomfortable. I also had a hysterosalpingogram where i had to have a catheter up in my cervix to release dye to see if my fallopian tubes are blocked. Godo news is that my left tube works but not my right but i can fall pregnant is what my gynaecologist has told me. I kinda fear that i cannot fall pregnant again but trying not to let that negativity go in my head.
I have been on Clomid for a month now and no succes as yet. I’m on the lowest dosage and maybe that may contribute as to why i’m not ovulating??? It is so fustrating that i’m 30 and getting older and my bilogical clock is ticking and i see women with their bumps and how glowing they look and i’m not getting there as yet:(…..My gynaecologist told me to take clomid on the second day of my cycle and she only gave me 5 tablets to start off with. Have intercourse on the 9 day til the 20th. In the two weeks i’ve had really strong period pain so my guess is that it didn’t work….can someone out there tell me if i’m doing it wrong or what?? i need all the help i can get.
Hi kerry i have read your comment and i feel for you cause i am in the same situation as you are. I have been married for about 6 years with no luck , unforunatly i have pcos and i am seeing a specialist , i would recommend if you see a reproductive specialist for fertility , they deal with fertility issues also i have heard that drinking an herbal sage for 2 months would help
Marsha,
My cousin had a cyst on her ovary and had it removed. She has one ovary and was given a 2% chance of not getting pregnant and in fact they told her that they don’t think she will ever have kids again. She didn’t think anymore of it and accepted it and I guess when you don’t think about it, you’re not stressed about it and she ended up going to the Dr. for a sinus infection…BAM! She was pregnant…infact about 8 or 9 weeks along and had no clue and her son will be 2 years old in July. Do not stress, do not worry. There is definitely a chance for you to have babies. If you have one ovary, you still have eggs and when those eggs are ready and the time is right, you will have babies
My Husband and I are trying now and we haven’t been able to get pregnant since September of 2010, so we’ll see. Baby dust to all of you.

I’m 22 yrs old and ive been trying to conceive now for a couple of months with my husband and still no luck. I had an abortion and regret it everyday. Its something i said i would NEVER do but put in the situation i was in a had no other choice. I really feel now i am ready and capable of raising a child and giving everything i have. i get to sad when i get my period month after month…Any thoughts.
Hi, I’m working on my first baby. I got my first shot of Depo Provera in December 2009, then second in March 2010, I didn’t get my third shot in June because my husband and I wanted to start a family. I only had two shots, where I had no period. In September and I was on a 5 day dose of Provera to get period back, but after two weeks it did not return. In Oct. light spotting for a day in a half. I got blood work done and my estrogen is a little low, but everything else is normal. I got my period back in last November and then returned in December. I really hoping that I don’t get my period this month. I see many women who are pregnant and I can’t wait until it’s my turn. I’m so ready to be pregnant. People say that it will happen, and don’t stress about it. However, that only makes it worse. I think that if you want something to happen, you have to try. I alone hope I don’t have wait too long. I never had any problems, my cycles were normal before the Depo Provera, I been thinking after two months, it may be something else.
Hello,
My husband and I have been trying off and on for a year to get pregnant but we have put it all in God’s hands. It gets discouraging sometimes but we have to have faith that we will get pregnant “naturally” on God’s timing and not ours. I pray that God can see we can take care of another child bringing the new addition into the family will be a breath of fresh air.. We have boys and want one or two more kids, preferably (daughters)… I lov kids and I love being a Mother. My husband and I do not have kids together yet but I know some day soon WE WILL….. I’ve found the man I want to spend the rest of my life with so we definitely want to have one or two kids together…. Keep us in prayer.. The Thomas family…

i just stopped taking my birth control pills about three weeks ago but was also taking medication for a yeast infection and have been getting this fuzzy feeling in my stomach could i possibly be pregnant? or just a reaction to the medication.
Hi Michelle. Are you still on yeast infection meds? Yeast infection medications may sometimes cause side effects such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or headache. Perhaps you could take a pregnancy test?

Please stop quoting your invisible friend. That has no more to do with your fertility than Zeus, Thor or any other human generated fabricated deity. Lets move from the dark ages here.
Faith is irrelevant, you need luck and good fortune and I wish you both of these of course.
Hi,
I am still quite young and not really trying to get pregnant, but I am also not not trying to get pregnant.. if you catch my drift. My fiancé and I have been together for 3 years and counting.. We have never used protection and we wondered why nothing was happening. Not like we were hoping to get pregnant or anything, but we just found it odd. Well about a year ago, for 3 days straight I couldn’t walk, stand up, lay down comfortably and it even hurt to pee! Finally, he took me to the emergency room. They told me it could be a fullopian pregnancy but I told them that I wasn’t pregnant (my mind knew).. they did tests and of course, I wasn’t. Allas, they scheduled me for an ultrasound. They found an ovarian cyst. My family doctor said it was nothing and it should go away. Here I am thinking, ok.. I was just talking to him about me not getting pregnant, and he can’t seem to find it in his mind to link the two together ???? Hullo! Ovarian cyst (travelling btw) and infertility…. So here I am a year later, I really want children and want to start doing something about it now before it’s too late to try. I don’t necessarily want to try for a child right now, but hey, if it happens.. I rather it be now than never. I wasn’t clinically diagnosed as infertile, but I consider myself infertile because there is probable cause because of my cyst. I cry almost every time I talk about it.. I am depressed about not being able to have children and I love my fiancé, I want to have his children and no one else’s. Is there any advice on what to do ? Please
p.s. I have a doctor’s appointment in March and I am discussing this with him. My cyst hasn’t “disappeared” as he said it would (I still feel the pain) and I am going to talk to him about some sort of possible treatment, medications or changes I have to take or make in order to be “fertile”! I think almost every woman wants to experience the beauty of pregnancy atleast once in their life.
^ the pain was in my abdomen fyi.
Hi Danika.
I am glad you’ve decided to have a checkup at obgyn, which is something every woman should do once a year, having cysts or not.
I also had a cyst and it was laparoscopicly removed, and before that I used to have more irregular menstrual cycles, while now I am more or less on time. If there is a large cyst and since it is causing problems you will probably have to get it removed. Don’t worry about that – the surgery is relatively quick, I stayed in hospital for abut 3 days and the recovery was also quick. Now, I am not saying you will definitely have to go to surgery, I am just saying it is great you have decided to visit obgyn.
Best wishes!
My hubby & I have recently started trying for another baby, we have 2 beautiful kids in school & thought it was time. However, I am so anxious to get preg. I think that I drive myself & him crazy! I just wanted to say that it does help to know there are others to talk to that know this feeling of helplessness and craziness that we all go thru at one time or another. FYI we are still trying with no success yet so evryone cross your fingers!

Hello Ladies just writing in for the first time. Read some posts. Kerry-anne I as well have a retoverted uterus and I took that same test. I was told everything looks fine from the gynocologist that my fallopian tubes are open and that I should have no problem concieving. It has been 6 years of ttc and since the test 2.5 years. I do have one child and got pregnant quickly which was beautiful. We are praying and trusting God for his decision for us to have a second child. Sharron I know how you feel it hurts when our period comes and there is no pregnancy. We have keep going forward ladies and keep our faith, pray, and trust the Lord our God our creator of the universe! He knows what is best for us all. “The lord is righteous in all his ways, gracious in all his works. The lord is near to all that call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He will fulfill the desires of those who fear him;”Psalm 145:17-19 Have a blessed day Ladies!
Hi,
I have experienced an irregular cycle for as long as I can remember, it varies from 27-35 days. It was a surprise when I found out that I was pregnant with my son because it wasn’t abnormal for my period to be late, that was over 5 years ago. I am trying to plan a pregnancy this time and aiming for a girl. I am curious about my Luteal Phase which always different and it makes me wonder if that will effect predicting ovulation. I have been charting my BBT and CM which seems to help but I don’t want an average, is their a way to get more exact?
What does the blue date mean?
Hi Ladies, just writing for the first time. This is my story, I was on the IUD Copper coil and came off it in Dec. I had my first cycle in January.( I’ve read that you have to have a good first cycle after coming off the coil). last week my period was due 10, on the 8th I saw some blood, when i wiped, which I assumed was the start of AF. On wednesday, nothing, On Thursday a little, by this time I was so ready and fed up and assumed it was AF. Friday morning nothing again, and I put it down to a weird period. However something did not seem right and my boobs were sore and tingly. I was doing alot of reading about implantation bleeding because one on my friends said thats was not a period that i had. I also spoke to a nurse over the phone and she told me that sometimes, you get ‘early bleeding’ in pregnancy. I decided to by a test because by this time I had noticed I was going to the ladies every 1/12 hours, which seemed strange considering I was not drinking alot of fluid. I decided to go to my local savers and buy a pound pregnancy test, after about 30 seconds to my delight I saw Two BFP LINES. I give all the glory to God for blessing me, and not waiting in him. Keep the faith ladies and stat calm. Good luck and God bless.xxxx
me and hubby have a 14 month old son and have been TTC since pretty much 6 weeks after first baby was born. My successful pregnancy only lasted 7 months (yes baby was 2 month early)! Ive been through 4 miscarriages. Every month i wait for my period not to arrive… but it does… ive given up taking pregnancy test as i keep miscarrying and it breaks my heart everytime… is it wrong to want another even though i have a beautiful son already? x
Marshall I don’t think it’s wrong to want another baby. My son is 7 going on 8 and me and my husband have been TTC since September of 2010 but every month I get the disappointing news that I’m not pregnant. I am getting so frustrated….I know that there are people out there that try for years but I had my son when I was 17 and of course was not even trying for him and now it seems to be so hard to have one on purpose. I am suppose to start on the 24th of this month and I have already taken a pregnancy test yesterday and it was negative…so now I guess I just have to wait and see what happens in the next couple of days and cross my fingers that aunt flow doesn’t visit this month…
pls HELP. i am 36 yrs old and have a son going to 7 yrs, i suffered from an eight month miscarriage last year June (2010). i have tried times without number now to re-conceive, all to no avail despite series of fertility drugs taken (clomid, chillated zinc, vitamin e, vitamin c and even bitters).
many months i felt the symptoms of pregnancy and latter the messes would come. QUITE FRUSTRATING! felt it again last month and i went for a test in the hospital and the gynaecologist test showed blighted ovum, i used the above drugs prescribed after last month messes (18/1/11) so after waiting for sometime for my messes this month, i thought i am pregnant, but ALAS; i saw it this morning. Please ADVISE ME WHAT WOULD I DO. PLSSSSSSSSSS.
Dear Anne.
I understand your feelings, and I do understand what are you going through. It is frustrating and stressful and all the things one would never wish to a friend…
It usually takes a bit longer to get pregnant when woman is older than 35 years old .. besides it is not necessary you are ‘the problem’. Had your partner got checked? there is a 50% chance male (or female) factor could be the cause a couple is having problems to get pregnant.
I am not sure about your religous views, but did you talk to your doctor about trying to conceive artificially or with IVF? Modern medicine is often the answer to people having troubles when trying to conceive.
Anne, I wish you all the best! And lost of baby dust!
I also had a blighted ovum & it was not noticed as such until 16 wks. It was very devastating to myself & my husband, but 5 months later of lots of trying we did conceive and have a beautiful daughter! there is hope so try to keep a positive attitude. It has been 7 years since our last child and we are currently hoping for a positive test next week. It all happens in due time and even though it is very hard we have to keep the faith.
I have two prior kids and now trying for a third one. First try was a miss. That’s never happened before but then again I’m much older. It’s harder to calculate because my length of menstrual cycle varies so much now. Anywhere from 28 to 32 days. Any suggestion?
pls help me i m 37yrsold woman got married in june 2010 ans still waiting to be pregnant my monthly cycle is normal but i have some obesity problem can some one give me any kind of help?
To ALEX:)
If faith is something that is not important to you, that is up to you….let us not put down those of us whom have faith in God. I have five children and I don’t attribute my having children with luck. There is no such thing as luck in my book. Looking at how a child is formed in the womb is not coincidence or chance……..
Do not put down those of us whom do believe in God.
