Hello,

This is my first post here – if all goes well, we may be able to participate on the pregnancy and baby board more actively soon. My husband and I are looking for tips on finding a surrogate mother. We are gay and from California. 

We're open to a surrogate living closeby, but also to international surrogates providing the surrogacy is done ethically. The well being of our future baby (with my husbands sperm and an egg donor) is in the first place. The surrogate should be of good health and not doing it for economic reasons only. 

Tips are very welcome.

Wow, that is a very exciting step! 

As someone who has no practical experience with surrogacy (other than watching documentaries on Indian surrogacy!), I have only one tip for you. Consult an attorney before even starting out on your search for the right surrogate mother. 

When you do find her, getting your agreements in paper (legally binding paper!) is much more important than how you find your surrogate mother. For instance, using an agency to be matched to a surrogate mother may well provide the illusion of a safety net, but unless you have a legal contract, this may be just that: an illusion. 

I also encourage you to watch documentaries about international surrogacy before making the decision to look further from home for someone to carry your baby.
