Hi,

I unexpectedly got pregnant with my second child, who is due in June. I already have a four year old son, and his pregnancy and birth were very uncomplicated and natural. This time around, I am 37. I have been prompted to have extra prenatal care and an amnio (which I turned down) all because of my age, even though I am seeing an OB who is known for being naturally minded.

I had a homebirth last time, and I was assuming I would have another one. My OB has been discouraging me. What do you think? Do the risks really go up that much, or can I have another homebirth in peace and safety?

Hi,

I had two homebirths myself, and would always choose to give birth at home if the situation allowed it. Nutrition and general health play a much greater role in risk determination than a few years of life. Risk does go up with age, but gradually – and you'd have to look at your own health, ultrasound results, and so on. 

Another thing to take into account is that you are not a first time mom anymore, and you've got a "proven pelvis". If your pregnancy is going well, you have a hospital close by, and (most importantly!) a competent midwife, you should be fine giving birth at home if that is what you feel most comfortable with.
