hi

i am newly pregnant but keep having these cramps in my lower abdomen. can someone tell me if this could be a symptom of miscarriage? this is my first pregnancy and i am already worried that something is going wrong. there is no bleeding right now. can someone tell me more about how to recognize a miscarriage?

Hi,

Cramps can be a miscarriage symptom, but not necessarily. Lower abdominal cramps are very common during early pregnancy. When I had a miscarriage, the cramping I experienced was much worse than the kind of cramp you generally get before a period, and they came in patterns – it was a "mini labor". 

There are also other symptoms; bleeding, passing tissue, and often the disappearance of pregnancy symptoms before you have a miscarriage. If you are really worried, the best thing to do is seeing your doctor and requesting an ultrasound. Once you are about eight weeks pregnant, your doctor should be able to see if there is a heartbeat or not with an abdominal ultrasound, though they may like to do a trans-vaginal ultrasound for more clarity.
