When can you take a pregnancy test after IVF?
Invitro fertilization, more commonly known simply as IVF, is an increasingly popular solution that helps many couples who are not able to conceive naturally. IVF is not only rising in popularity, but this medical procedure in which an egg is artificially fertilized and then implanted into a woman’s uterus is also becoming ever more successful. If you are among those who are undergoing IVF, there is no doubt that you are wondering how soon after one or more embryos were returned to your uterus you can take a pregnancy test.
Normal embryos will hatch from their shell between days five and seven following the fertilization of the egg. Because IVF embryos are transferred to the uterus at different possible stages of development, the timing of implantation into the uterine lining will also vary. A day three transfer would result in implantation after two to five days, while a day five transfer would result in attachment after only one to three days.
But this does not mean that women who underwent IVF can do a home pregnancy test that soon after the procedure. Because of the large amount of medications involved in creating a pregnancy through IVF, home pregnancy tests are not recommended at all for this procedure. Instead, the fertility clinic at which a woman underwent her IVF procedure will carry out a blood pregnancy test. When?
If an embryo has implanted into the uterus successfully, hCG, human chorionic gonadotropin, will start being produced very soon. Fertility clinics have varying policies on when they start pregnancy testing. But as a rule, reproductive endocrinologists will normally carry out blood tests that look for hCG levels at around nine to eleven days after the embryo or embryos were inserted into a woman’s womb. This is the time at which hCG levels are likely to be detectable in the mother’s blood stream. Again, the timing differs depending on the maturity of the embryo during the transfer. Nine days is the time frame for day five transfers, while day three transfers will require 11 days of waiting.
Did you just have IVF, and are you really impatient? The temptation of taking a urine pregnancy test at home may be really big. Should you do it? Of course, it is up to you. But generally, the answer is that there is no point. Taking a urine pregnancy test after invitro fertilization carries an extremely high chance of false negatives, because they are much less sensitive than blood tests and can therefore detect much smaller amounts of the hormone hCG.
If you have undergone IVF, in short, you will be able to find out whether you are pregnant at the same time after implantation as any other woman. The method will just be slightly different. Prevent disappointment when you may actually be pregnant after all, and go to your fertility clinic to get tested!

had embryo transfer 5 days ago. took home pregnancy test today and results were negative. is this accurate?
Hi – I have just been advised that my beta was 0 (negative result) on day 9 after embryo transfer after two grade AA embryos were transferred on day 5,(donor embryos) is there any chance if I had another blood test that there is a chance this could change to a positive pregnancy? This is my 8th IVF cycle 4 cycles using my own embryos, this is my second donor this is a fresh cycle. What is your thoughts?
Kerry, Did you become pregnant? I am starting shots tomorrow with transfer near the 6th of April, 2012. This is our first try with IVF due to my husband azoospermia.
Hi I had my transfer 19th march, now anxiously waiting that 2 week wait, 1 more week to go
I had my embryo transfer March 21st. Had pain similar to menstrual cramps on day 3-5. Now, I don’t have any symptoms and worried embies are no longer there. Argh, dislike the 2ww.
Cuddles, let me know how it goes for you. Good luck
Hi, I had my embryo transfer March 21st. Started having menstrual cramp-like pain on Day 3-5. Totally dislike the 2ww.
Hi, I had my trasfer on Mar 25th, I go in 3 days for my blood work. I had cramps about day 6, now nothing. This is my second cycle. 1st cycle was 4 yrs ago. This is our last chance, did get pregnant the first cycle… good luck to all!

Hi All – I also had a 4/2/12 transfer, but it was a 3d. This is my first IVF and the 2ww is killing me…first beta is 4/14 and then second beta is 4/16…hoping the levels go up. We transferred 2 6-cell grade B and B- embies…really hoping for a miracle. We did not have any embies to freeze.
Hi there.
I had my egg retrieval on 30 March 12 and my transfer was on 3 April 12.
I am due for my blood test on Monday 16 April, the tww is doing my head in!
I woke this morning at 4 am with slight brown discharge not enough to make it to the undies
But enough to see on the loo paper.
I have read that this can be common, but it’s freaking me out because sometimes my period also starts that way. Am I being a worry wart? I was thinking about a home preg test. Should I do it to myself or should I just wait the 3 days I’m supposed to until my bloods? Has anyone had the same experience? I just hope all you ladies are doing fine and get the results we are all dreaming for!
Don’t do a home pregnancy test, because it is not reliable for IVF! You’ve only got a few days left to wait… we’ll count with you!
Couldn’t help myself and had to test, negative result
I have had more spotting, this time reddish in colour, but still not full flow, needless to say there has been a few tears, I’m still going to keep a glimmer of hope and keep my fingers crossed that I get no more over the weekend, and see what happens with the blood test Monday. All I can do is be positive and be thankful for all I have because someone, somewhere is always doing it harder than me.
Good luck Leanne my fet blood test will be on Monday 16 of April also.I have about 24 hours.i have some early home pregnancy test I got in the mail with something else I ordered. Im gonna try not to take a test but on the same note I want to prepare for a negative result mentally.

Hello alllll,
Hope everyone got pregnant. It is very stressful and 2ww are getting to me! I had a day 3 transfer on May 10th and now waiting! Today I got the call that all 5 embryos left didn’t make it which caused me going into an hr of hysterical crying! I had a painful retrieval stage and I was hoping we freeze something just in case. I am praying for a miracle! I don’t know what will happen to me if I don’t get pregnant this cycle!
Best wishes to everyone and I really wish that no one would go through this pain…
